How long have you been Art Journaling?
I have been journaling since I got my very first diary as a little girl but didn’t start officially Art Journaling until the summer of 2008.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Wow, it would be easier to ask “How has it NOT impacted my life?” LOL! ☺ Art Journaling, and specifically Soul Journaling had allowed me to meet so many wonderful people and has opened up an entire new online world to me. It has changed the course of my whole career and helped me through some of the darkest times in my life, lifting me up and allowing me a safe place to express all of my hopes, dreams, and fears.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
I use tons of random things in my journals from everyday trash to fancy scrap booking materials, and I really like the contrast that those two elements bring. I am also a huge fan of Gesso! I buy it in giant tubs. I LOVE the texture and depth it gives my paper.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?
My students! They are so creative and inspirational. Many of these women are just picking up a paint brush for the first time or are just starting to blossom into the artist of their dreams. It is such an amazing transformation to watch. Their art is raw and emotional and not yet influenced by outside sources or critics. Simply amazing!

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Play. Experiment. Play some more. Don’t be afraid to make ugly journal pages. And you’re not alone! Join an online journaling community such as Soul Journaling to meet fellow journalers and get inspiration.

My name is Sarah Whitmire and I am a mixed-media artist and instructor. I enjoy working in many mediums, including but not limited to encaustics, collage and acrylics. Though I live and work in a smallish town in northern Florida, I enjoy using the internet to reach a much larger audience. I currently teach online workshops through Joggles as well as through my own blog and Yahoo groups. I am also a Design Team member for Alpha Stamps which means I get to play with their awesome products on a daily basis.

My proudest achievement to date is the creation and founding of Soul Journaling, a series of guided mixed-media visual journaling workshops that has inspired a growing community of people from all walks of life and from all over the globe to come together through art and self-expression. My work has been featured in some of my favorite magazines; Somerset Studio, Somerset Studio Gallery, Somerset Home, Cloth Paper Scissors and Rubber Stamp Madness, and I am a member of several organizations, including the Gainesville Fine Art Association, the North Florida Craft Revolution and the Florida Etsy Street Team.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
Since I was younger, I’ve always kept some kind of diary/journal. I remember back when I was second grade, I had a diary that had a lock on it. I would write about my life, what I wanted to be when I grew up and fill it up with pictures, poems and stories. I started making my own journals in 8th grade. Back then they were simple books made with brown paper bag pages with handmade paper covers tied together with tulle. My journals were my space to dream, play and write stories and what ever I wanted. Then in high school, I started working in sketchbooks where I would draw fashion designs and doodles. It wasn’t until college that I combined my art and journaling on a page. I studied architecture and graphic design and always carried around a sketchbook. So I would sketch, write notes and observations, sometimes adding in magazine clippings and collage images that were inspiration for my design projects. Also, I’ve always had some kind of notebook that I use as an idea book, a journal to write my business ideas, brainstorm projects and notes related to work. Along with an organizer/calendar that became somewhat of a journal, where I would write to do lists, daily activities, memories, appointments and sometimes taping in photos, receipts and maps.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed or enhanced your life?
Art Journaling has been something I’ve always done for fun. It has impacted my life in a great way; I found a way to turn my passion into my career. I am blessed to make my living doodling and painting. Art Journaling has put me in touch with artists from around the world. By sharing and teaching techniques through my videos, workshops and writings, I encourage others to develop their creative spirits. Now, I make one-of-a-kind art journals that I have sold to collectors worldwide. My journals have been published in several magazines and books. My creative business has developed from my art journals…from brainstorming dreams and goals in my books, to creating art to sell and developing product lines of stationery, scrapbook papers, digital downloads, online workshops and Collage Pauge.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
For me the art of making the journals is as important as filling them up with art. The covers of my journals are patchwork collage art quilts embellished with wild freeform stitching. All of my journals have random-sized,painted pages. I monoprint single sheets of recycled papers and then use creative techniques to bind them together. That usually involves machine stitching for smaller idea books, freestyle macramé with beads and baubles or sometimes woven yarn, fabrics and ribbons embellished with silk flowers, tag, crochet bits and pompoms.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Use your journal as a place to spill, play and experiment. Everyone journals differently, I work in my books in a random fashion, I open it up to a page and make a few marks, then turn the page and add a photo and then maybe got back to different page and add words. Sometimes I journal on separate sheets of paper and attach them back into my journals. There is no order with my art journaling. So do what you want and have fun with it… it’s your personal space to PLAY!

After a successful design and marketing career in Silicon Valley, I was longing for more so I left the corporate world to pursue my passion for art. 2011 marks the 10-year anniversary of launching my creative business endeavor. Prior to becoming a full-time artist, I worked as a graphic designer, event planner, marketing director, professional cheerleader, elementary art teacher, fashion designer and Web designer– just to name a few. Experiences that I gained these positions, coupled with my innate drive to explore and create without boundaries are what contribute to my success as a mixed media artist.

My passion for sharing art has led me on a worldwide tour teaching mixed media workshops in handmade books, art journaling, collage, and surface design. The handmade journals, custom handbags and paintings I create are layered with rich textures, wildly painted and stitched fabric, “girlie glam” ink drawings and free style lettering. Bold use of color, doodling and images are spilled throughout my art.

In 2005, I wrote my first book, Collage Unleashed and am currently working on my next book. My art has been featured in over 15 art/mixed media books and 40 craft magazines including Somerset Studio, Altered Couture, cloth.paper.scissors, Art Journaling, Art Quilting Studio, Belle Armoire and Craft. I have been a regular guest on DIY/HGTV Craft Lab. Looking forward, I am continuing to develop product and I have designed licensed product lines, Collage Pauge adhesive and {kolLAJ} paper crafts.

Being an artist has led me through an amazing journey that is continually changing and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It helped me discover that it’s important to have passion for what I do. Leaving something that is stable and taking a big risk to the unknown is scary, but I truly believe that if you are doing what you LOVE only the best things follow … that is TRUE success.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
It's been about four years since I wholeheartedly got into it. I wasn't real sure about it at first, but all of the reasons that kept me from it eventually attracted me to it.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
In so many ways, personally and professionally. Personally, it has brought more creativity to my life. I once again journal, as I did when I was a kid, but now I do it visually, which feels more natural. Professionally, it's helped me become an author and teacher. It's enhanced my design work and helped me begin a hand-lettering part of my career. Nothing but good things!

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
I LOVE Souffle pens, markers such as Tombow, and cheap acrylic craft paints for my page backgrounds. Tombow Mono Adhesive is a must!

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Learn what you can through books and workshops and online. DON'T worry about what your pages look like at first. You will most likely hate them. I hated my pages for quite some time. But keep at it. Copy others to learn, but don't do that for too long. You can't be true to yourself if your art journal pages look like someone else's. That's not art journaling. Look at others' pages and try to pinpoint WHAT it is you like about their pages. Is it the color palette? The style of backgrounds? The use of collage? Take little things you like about others' pages and combine them to make your own style. It takes TIME. And patience. And an open mind. Keep at it. Be true to your art journal and it will be true to you. If your art journal is you, then it is GORGEOUS!

After seven years of art directing magazines including America West Airlines Magazine, I decided to design books from my home studio. I design coffee table books, gift books, cookbooks, and kids books, and my design work has been included in Print’s Regional Design Annual 2002 and also has been recognized by the Copper Quill Awards, the Association of Partners for Public Lands, January Magazine, and Round & Coffin Club’s 2005 Western Books Exhibition, among others. How long have you been Art Journaling?
I've kept a visual journal for most of my life. Of course, when I was 5 they were called scrapbooks, then in high school they were sketchbooks or notebooks, then they became visual journals - my preferred term. People think because the term 'art journaling' is relatively new that the journals themselves are new. But Frida Kahlo kept one. So did Leanardo Da Vinci. So did Mary Anne, my grandmother. She pasted in just about everything into her journals and encouraged me to do the same. I began by helping her, then one Christmas she bought me my own book and I've kept a visual journal, in some format, ever since. Over the years I've yo-yo'd between many styles from pure collage to just writing and sketching, to full on painted pages. You can tell when I get a new book on journalng because I'll go through a spate of a certain style of pages. I always come back to just simple pen and collage though because I'll always be an illustrator at heart and painted pages are just too messy for me. I'm just not a layers kind of girl; I can do it, but I don't really enjoy it.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
I've kept a visual journal (i.e. not just plain writing) for over 30 years, so it's hard to tell because I don't really know any different. I watch a lot less TV than anyone else I know. In fact I don't even have one! I watch particular programs over the internet on BBC iPlayer but mostly I listen to audiobooks and play in my journal for downtime. When I was younger I would rather be in my room playing music and journaling than out with friends. Playing in my journal is my default. I can't sit and do nothing, I have to have a pen in my hand.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
Just a pen and some gluestick. Plus my Neocolour IIs if I want to add some colour. My roots are in illustration and even though I do have a journal that's painted, I'd much rather doodle, illustrate, collage and write in my journals. It's also much easier for carrying around - I never leave home without my everyday journal and my pencil case.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?
I like the work of lots of art journallers, but my favourites tend to belong to illustrators. I really love the work of :

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Don't feel you have to do what everyone else is doing or have a particular 'style'. I have a different style for every day of the month and then some. If I didn't, I'd get bored. But changing it up whenever I feel like it gives me the freedom I love, so I do it. It's not about being good, it's about feeling good about doing it. If that means embracing your penchant for having 15 journals or using a different style everyday, so be it.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

Only a few short months. As a little girl, I had many locked journals with combinations and tiny keys but they held only words. I have relied on the written word as my confidant for most of my life, but just expanded into artistic play through Connie’s Art Journal Love Letters.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

It has helped me get out of the way of myself. And you know what? I LOVE who I found.

I am brave, expressive, deep, scarred, flawed, perfect, human, and divine. Who knew?

I still forget from time to time, but artistic expression…in particular with a journal in which I am having a private conversation with my Self…helps remind me.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Paints (acrylic & watercolor), Gesso (white & clear), stamp ink, colored pencils, digital and sketched images, baby wipes (to clean, smear paint, and the painted wipes on the page!), my fingers, and music. And an iced chai within reach.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I began art journaling in my pre or early teens, though I wouldn't have known to call it that at the time. I was drawing and writing in notebooks, getting feelings out and processing my thoughts pretty early on.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

I truly believe that art journaling has pretty much saved my life, several times over.
As a child growing up with a violent, alcoholic mother there was very little predictability in life, but my art was always a sure thing. When I felt there was no where else to turn, I had a way to express the hurt, anger, and confusion that was going on inside of me. Through my art I was able to release the feelings that would otherwise have built up inside, with no where else to go.

My art journals have continued to be the way I process the challenges in my life. As an adult I've had to deal with a number of health issues - I've used my journal for exploring and releasing the emotions that have risen and aren't constructive. It's helped me find acceptance in the seemingly unacceptable, understanding in the baffling, and a sense of peace in the midst of chaos. Having a daily record to look back upon allows me to see when patterns develop in my imagery or use of words - I can catch myself in negative patterns and make changes, or reinforce positive evolutions that or occurring. Having this concrete record helps make real the goals and dreams of life!

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

I tend to keep two kinds of journals going at once - one is purely collage, so for that my favorite items are a glue stick and anything collage-able! Old calendars, magazines, and newspapers headed for recycling.

My other journal is more mixed media - for that gesso is my favorite thing. A base of gesso gives my pages body, strength and texture to build on, with acrylic paints, pastels, stitching, stamping - what ever I want to add.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Trust yourself, allow for spontaneity, play, freedom and exploration. Don't judge - if your first instinct is to grab a red crayon and then a voice chimes in, "what? get the cadmium red acrylic paint and fine point brush out" ignore the second voice and always go with your first instinct - it speaks Truth.

Be sure to cater to your inner voice, not some imagined audience that may see your journal in the future, or on your blog. If you are imagining how someone else is going to see what you are doing, then the Censor will undoubtedly make an appearance! I always center myself and connect deeply within myself before I start. During my process, no one is ever going to see what I've done. Sometimes it's hard to share the results, but when I do I know they are pure truth, and all me. I can be assured that what I've uncovered, discovered, recovered and learned is exactly what my process has guided me to, and nothing I forced into being.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I’ve been keeping traditional journals for many years, but art journaling didn’t happen for me until a couple of years ago. I’d seen some art journaling by Dan Eldon and others and was really psyched. But I had never picked up a paint brush before - although I was raised by an artist. I remember experimenting with painting some pages - just rubbing color around with paper towels! Then I’d write over that. I was really pretty frustrated at the time, trying to figure it all out for myself. This was well before the rush of YouTube videos, books and magazines about art journaling.

When I saw that my favorite artist, Sabrina Ward Harrison, was offering a workshop locally, I had to go see how it was all done. That was two years ago and since that time I’ve not stopped!

Below is the book I made in that first class with Sabrina ....my first taste of collage!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

It’s changed EVERYTHING - truly!

Because of it, my life has bloomed. I have become an "artist". I've tried out many types of journaling styles, which gave me the confidence to begin painting on canvas a year ago. I have even taken the rather bold step of renting a large studio space - just 5 months ago! I needed the space - if only to house my ever expanding cache of art supplies!

In this time, I've also become a creativity coach and have hosted journaling workshops of my own. I plan to do more AND host other teacher's classes in my new studio space!

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

I do several different types of art journals, so my range of materials is quite wide.

For painted and collaged journals, I love inexpensive acrylic paints, water color crayons, gel medium, permanent glue sticks, white gel pens and tapes of all kind - especially graphic black and white patterns!

For my sewn up journals, I love to bind them with batiks, ethnic prints or re-purposed books. I sew papers together with mismatched threads. The paper I use tends to be scraps, junk mail and souvenirs picked up on my frequent “artist dates” to art galleries, street fairs, etc.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I’ve attempted to art journal a couple of times over the past two years, but failed to please myself with the work I was doing because I was caught up in a perfectionist trap. About three months ago, I found Art Journal LOVE Letters, signed up, and I’ve been gangbusters ever since. Thanks to our beloved Connie, I have found my MESSY and I love it to pieces!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

Art journaling has been a panacea for a problem with perfectionism that has been with me since childhood. I believed, prior to finding my personal art journaling niche, that I could never do anything right. This is typical for survivors of child sexual abuse, unfortunately, and though I have done a lot of intense therapy, this one issue really held over for me until I started to splash paint and gel medium around in my journal. Shortly after I took the LOVE Letters workshop, I claimed space in my house for my very own, set up an artsy fartsy studio, and did not let anything distract me from my new goal – to make something every day. The joy I derive from it has rescued me from depression, given me renewed zest for life, and a completely new sense of direction. I have never known what I wanted to be when I grew up, but now I know, and I’m even brave enough to tell you! I want to work with women in homeless shelters and addictions treatment centers. I want to bring them art journal LOVE. I want to share what I’ve discovered – that self-expression is the most self-loving thing we can do for ourselves.

My favourite materials are watercolour crayons, Golden liquid acrylics, and gel medium. Oh, and I can’t live without my Art Journal LOVE Letters journal by RobynsArt.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
I have been art journaling consistently since 2007, though I have kept a visual journal of some kind off and on since my teens. It feels funny to think that something that is such an important part of my life has only really been around for three years!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
I think in many ways, my Art journaling practice actually saved my life ! It is definitely one of my best and favorite tools in my Living Well toolbox. I consider the time I spend creating within its pages as meditation, a time when my mind and anxiety are quiet, and my Artist Spirit and my imagination take over. The creative process of playing with images, textures, colors, materials, symbols and ideas takes me to a place where I am just ME ! And I have learned to really, really love that Artist in me, for all her strength, wisdom, courage and talent.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
I am completely in love with India Ink and I love using the old dip pen I inherited from my Dad to do detailed pen work on most of my pages. The black is just so dark and rich ! I also love vibrant color so Golden Fluid acrylics, Portfolio Water Soluble Oil Pastels and Derwent Inktense Watercolor Pencils really work for me as the colors they provide have that intensity that I love.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?
Judy Wise – One of my favorite and best teachers ever, not to mention and extraordinary person to know!
Paula Bogdan – my Blogland friend who pours her heart and spirit into her pages
Ingrid Dijkers – I hope one day to get to take a class with her. She has such imagination and amazing and different techniques in her pages.
Julie Prichard – one of the first on-line art journalers I connected with, Julie uses amazing backgrounds and a few well-chosen words that create impactful pages
Sarah Whitmire – who is so generous with her time and her inspiration. She even offers a journal prompt a day on Twitter!

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Play, play, play ! Don’t take it too seriously and for goodness sake, don’t expect every page to be beautiful ! Allow yourself to make ugly art. Or try what I love to do and search your pages for “sweet spots” – little treasured pieces that really shine. It is YOUR VERY OWN Process ! There is truly no right or wrong involved. You are taking the time just for you, to see what will come and to let your inner artist develop. You deserve that time. Play, beautiful One, play…

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I have been keeping journals/diaries in one form or another since I was very young...my 2nd grade teacher got me hooked on entering a daily story in a diary, and when she told me I could decorate my cover - I was hooked! I have always kept a personal writing journal, and while I didn't realize it was a "visual" journal, when I look back now, those journals were full of doodles, drawings, collage, and color in addition to my writing. I learned "officially" about art journaling via Rachel Whetzel, who rocks AND who hosts an art journaling group at www.oneyearartjournal.blogspot.com. In addition to my other journals, I continue to use the prompts featured on that blog today and participate there.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

What keeping an art journal(s) has done for me is best described as giving me creative freedom. Instead of worrying about the usual aspects of a creative project (plan, finished product, message, how it will be received by others) I can seriously kick back with my art journal and just BE. I allow myself absolute freedom in this little creative place...I can use anything, do anything, write anything, FEEL anything, or just play...and it is all okay. I don't have to show it to anyone unless I choose, and it has been an amazing place of comfort, power and exploration for me.

I have also found my art journals to be healing and therapeutic...for example, my day-job as a foster care social worker comes with a lot of responsibility, sadness, crisis, and stress...and I have found over the years that I carry every child's story with me, which at times can be almost too much to bear. It has been so helpful to have my art journal available to me to release the powerful emotions & stories associated with my career, while safely containing them within the pages of my art journal.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Anything within easy reach is fair game as art journal material to me! My favorite traditional art supplies are watercolor crayons (so smooshy & fun,) acrylic paint, chalk inks & pastels, all types of markers, crayola crayons, and lots of gesso/gel medium. I also like to use collage elements, stamps, text, and my recent fascination has been with stencils & spray paint. Confession: I have also been known, on occasion, to tear out pages from magazines in doctor's waiting rooms to use as fodder for my journaling as well. Shh...

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Step 1: Lock that inner perfectionistic, critical beyotch in the closet and turn up your favorite music so you can't hear her criticizing you.
Step 2: Get yourself any kind of journal and some crayons, ink, pens, paint, or markers and just dive in headfirst! If the blank page staring back at you freaks you out a little, paste some text (torn dictionary page perhaps?) on the journal or pour some paint on the page, close the book and smoosh it around, close your eyes &scribble or maybe use your hand to fingerpaint, and then voila! You've made a mark!
Step 3: Give yourself permission to let it all out, be yourself, choose colors & images YOU are drawn to, and especially - permission to make ugly pages...some of my most horrific looking pages mean the most to be because of the PROCESS of making those pages...
Step 4: Still not ready to jump in? Get yourself online and google "art journal" or visit some of the links shared here during these 30 days and you'll find more inspiration than you know what to do with!
Caution: While it is tempting, and sometimes helpful, to try to emulate someone else's style as you're getting comfortable...be sure to let the YOU shine through...this is YOUR journal, you don't have to show it to anyone, and for pete's sake if you hate it when you're done, gesso over it and start again! It's all good. :)

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I started Art Journaling shortly after starting my blog back in 2004. It was then I entering into the magic new world of online creativity, craft, art and mixed media adventure. I bought Lynne Perrella’s beautiful book Artists' Journals and Sketchbooks from Amazon and read it several times before I jumped in and started my first art journal, a big spiral bound book that was filled with sturdy papers.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

Many artists keep a journal to record their artistic development. I think I owe my artistic development to the Art Journal. It is because this practice I sometimes dare to call myself an artist these days. I use it to continuously experiment with collage, paint and new techniques. Filling it fuels my happiness and stretches my brain.

What are few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

I use about everything that is flat and can be glued down in my different Art Journals. I love to make little water colour drawings or to paint bold backgrounds with acrylic paint using old credit cards, sequin waste (as a stencil) and hand carved stamps. Though the one thing I can not be without is the handy glue stick. I use a ton of glue for my collages every year.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

On my blog I have a whole link list of wonderful bloggers that share their Art Journals online, go check it out. To mention a few places where I go for information, I like flickr groups like Journal Junk and Collage Kids.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Don’t be afraid to mess everything up, that is the best part! You are a free person, try to ignore your fears and the hesitation that might hold you back. You can do it, I know you can!

I’m a slash person; someone who has multiple “job” descriptions and juggles in many different fields. For example I’m a Mixed Media Artist Wannabe and a Web designer but also a Big sister, Feminist, Swedish Chicka, a Journalist and writer, a Notebook junkie, a Yoga Enjoyer and a tired Night Owl.

In the midst of this creative swirl that surround me, with mile long To Do-lists, blogging, writing in my diary in full view of all the Projects laying around on the planning table, I try to be mindful. I practice by taking long walks, doing yoga and meditating (calming my monkey mind). I try to find balance through my breathing from time to time. Balance is something to strive for, every day.

I believe in connecting with others, doing something creative every day, recycling and taking responsibility for the environment, dealing with problems right away and doing the best with what you have. I also strongly believe that YOU and everyone on this earth are creative beings. Creativity comes in many forms and flavors, and happiness comes when you find what is right for you in your life. It might take some digging inside of you to find it, but when you do you’ll be happy you took the time!

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I discovered art journaling when I stumbled on an article about Dan Eldon while I was teaching a creative writing workshop to a group of teens. I was blown away by his journals. I didn't start my own journal for quite some time and even then I would not have called them art journals. I was just playing with color and cutting things from magazines. Looking back at that first journal I realize I was art journaling, I just didn't know that was what it was! I discovered Sabrina Ward Harrison when I bought one of her books for my eldest daughter. And then I discovered blogging and I was hooked!!! I have several different sizes of journals, some hand made, some store bought and I go will work on one and while I wait for something to dry, I will open a different one. It is one of my great pleasures. If for some reason, I don't have the chance to play with my journals, it is upsetting. My days are much better if I take the time to at least put a layer of watercolor on a page.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

WOW! Art journaling has opened my soul! Is that corny? But it has. If I art journal I feel myself expand. I allow all those emotions that get pushed by the wayside because of responsibility and lack of time to express themselves. I have learned so much about myself by just letting my paint brush speak for me. By letting the words and images flow. I am amazed by the messages that are in my art journal.

In the past I wrote in a journal. Many journals. Many words. But my art journal allows me to express myself with images, with color, and not with just words. I make time to art journal. It is much cheaper than a therapist! : ) Art journaling is a huge part of my life. While my mother was in hospital recovering from hip surgery recently, my art journal helped me express the worry, the anxiety, and the stress with just color and words. And then as she recovered my journal showed the light and color of hope that came through. Today I made a new journal for myself to explore using black paper. I also started a new journal with a fabric that has this amazing Fabriano paper. I can't wait to start with them! Every day I journal is a day I discover more about myself.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Pretty much anything goes. I love watercolor, colored markers, and stenciling! Oil pastels, photos, anything that is laying near me. Layers are so much fun and I don't worry about the product just the process. I often don't actually write or journal anything until later. I will go back to a page that I prepared and it sets off something in my mind and I then journal on it. Other times, I will sit down with an emotion or intention and create a page.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

Just as July is a celebration for the beautiful Connie of Dirty Footprints Studio, it marks an important anniversary for me as well. One year ago I pushed away fears of not being an artist and created my first art journal page. See, I have been "crafty" all my life, but believing that I "couldn't" draw I shied away from art classes and art for many years. To fulfill my need to create I started scrapbooking in my late teens. I still enjoy all paper arts, but after that first art journal page, I was hooked.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

Followers of my blog, or those that read my journal pages know that I suffer from anxiety. I use layers of paint, ink, paper and ephemera to release these irrational thoughts from my head. Not only have I grown artistically, art journaling has enabled me to heal mentally. Recently I fractured my ankle in three places and was forced to spend a month on the couch. I turned to my love of art journaling to transform such an ugly injury into a journey that has changed and enriched my life. Art from the couch has launched me into this beautiful, warm, creative community that I feel truly blessed to be a part of.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Due to my love of all paper arts I enjoy using my "retro" scrapbook supplies in my art journals. I tend to use a lot of rubber stamps, acrylic paints, ink and stencils. I love to create with whatever supplies are on my table at the time, challenging myself to try new things. Check out my "must have" supply videos here and here.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

This past year has opened my eyes in many ways. By following the wonderful art and videos of wonderful artists like Leslie Herger,Samantha Kira, Traci Bautista , Mystele, and Connie I gained knowledge and confidence to find my own style. It took me the better part of a year to believe, finally, that I am an artist.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

I can relate to all those out there that feel the urge to create but are too scared to start. I understand those that feel they are not "artists" yet desire to start playing with paint. I believe that we are all creative inside. Find a book, gather the supplies you have and just start. If that means you are adding doodles to your words, that's great. Start small if that's what you need to do. You will learn, you will grow, you will enrich your life.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I began my first journal a little over a year ago. My then 4 year old daughter & I signed up for the e-course Mermaid Warrior Art Camp with McCabe Russell, the Dancing Mermaid and we made journals for that class. Shortly after that, I dove into Emily Falconbridge's 52Q tag project which meant catching up on 6 months worth of weekly journaling prompts!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

Art journaling has become a major tool in my daily practice or attempt to live my life wide awake and present. Sometimes I turn to it to unwind after a hard day and even when I feel like I am just playing around, it helps me tap into deep truths or insights that might otherwise go unnoticed. It is a way I interpret and experience my life. Playful, fun, joy filled experiences inform my art journaling but I also turn to my journal to process more painful and difficult feelings.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

I love gesso! I never seem to have the proper paper for the materials I am using so the gesso helps provide a solid surface for my paints. My Caran d'ache watercolor crayons are a favorite material for their rich color and juicyness. I also paint with the cheap craft paints from Michaels or Hobby Lobby because they have such fun colors and are super inexpensive. I try to incorporate photographs I've taken into my work as a way to bridge two of passions: journaling and photography. In addition to my journals (I have 3 going at any given time) I have been taking old postcards from gallery exhibits, gessoing over them and painting little postcard paintings. They are the perfect size for a quick painting fix.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

I tend to gather my inspiration from all over, not just art journalers. You, Connie, have been a HUGE inspiration because of your painterly approach to journaling. I guess I had always thought of art journalers as more as mixed media/collage artists or pen and ink which isn't the case as I peruse more websites. But I am still discovering new art journalers who excite me.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Embrace your newness! I am grateful I did not have a preconceived notion of what art journaling was meant to be so I just did what I wanted to do. Experiment with techniques and mediums; consider your journal as a place to play and learn and embrace the process rather than worrying about creating a fantastically artistic page. When I approach my journal with an attitude of experimentally play, I discover so much more in the process. Let yourself make mistakes: that is how you learn about your materials and how you discover your voice. I tend to stop short, fearful of ruining a page. I've learned from you Connie to keep pushing it, to squeeze even more out of a page and in the process come to a new place of understanding or awareness. Embracing mistakes, welcoming mess - that is hard for me but I have learned more from those experiences than by playing it safe and tidy.

I am a part time yoga teacher and a full time mom to a 5 year daughter who has been my creative inspiration and muse. I was an art major in college and have a master's degree in art history. A recovering Perfectionist, I made my way back to art-making via my daughter who re-awoke the child within me who had loved art and worried she wasn't good enough. I am happy to say, I make art every day and I embrace the notion that I am a thriving artist living in suburbia, weaving magic into my everyday world. How long have you been Art Journaling?

I have been art journaling since the late 90s, but before 2004, I wasn't calling it art journaling. I started using day planners to jot down dreams, appointments, and other art related ideas as well as thumb nail sketches and ideas for paintings. I had very nice, lined journals that had been given to me as gifts by my sweet hubby and other friends, but I could never seem to get much past February or March. At the time, I was showing in galleries and after 4-5 years, I tired of it. I had fallen into the trap of painting what I thought would sell instead of being true to myself. I was depressed and unhappy and I dropped out of the local art scene to clear my head.

During that time, I also had to deal with breast cancer. That began in June of 1998 and lasted a year between the surgeries, chemo and radiation. As a result of treatment, I found myself in the middle of insomnia and began spending lots of time on the internet. Aside from a cancer support chat room, I stumbled upon a plethora of Yahoo art groups where I was soon knee deep into ATCs (Artist Trading Cards), altered books, round robins, swaps, etc. I was having the time of my life! I even joined a magazine swap with my one and only edition of "Ang-i-tude". (I now have a blog of that same title). I also joined a group called "Composition Notebooks". That's when my love affair with real art journaling began.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

I could really write a book on the impact of art journaling for not only myself but for the impact that I've seen it have on others. There's great satisfaction in completing a painting and having someone come up to me to share how my message has reached them; however, there's NOTHING like the feeling I get when I'm able to guide someone into experessing their own feelings and experiences through the use of art techniques.

My greatest joy in art journaling is in showing others that they DO have a voice and that they CAN express it in a creative manner. I'm particularly drawn to helping women through this method of journaling. There's just so much pain and sadness and struggle now. People need a creative outlet and they need to hear their own voices. They need to detach from the plethora of media and advertising telling them who, what and where they should be. People need to heal.

I've been fortunate to be able to share art journaling at the college level through the Women's Center at our local college and I've also shared my method of art journaling with friends and family. We've shared tears, laughter and joy with each other. My mother, who died in March 2008, was also able to use art journaling as an outlet to cope with her illness and traumatic hospital stays. At the time, we had no idea she was slowly dying from pancreatic cancer. Her art journal is a possession that is priceless to me. It was the only way I knew to help her and it was something she continued until the very last days before her death. I am currently working with the help of my friends at the Women's Center to offer art journaling workshops.

What are a few of your favorite Art Jouranling materials to use?

My journaling supply list is simple. Composition notebooks (they're really quite sturdy) glue sticks, magazine clippings (photos and phrases), watercolor & colored pencils, watercolors and acrylics. I sometimes use commercial papers but not often. I also use markers, black fine point Sharpies and white gel pens. My new absolute favorite is Reeves Water Soluble Pastels. LOVE, love, love them!

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

I have to be honest - I've spent so much time perfecting my own method that I haven't really researched many journalists online. I've networked with quite a few but I haven't actually seen a lot of their work. I do have some favorite books and you can find those posted on my journaling blog. Most of the journalers I've seen is on the NING group Art Journaling. That's how I met this awesome journaler named Connie! I also have a list of art blogs and Blog Hops on my journaling blog. I started a YouTube Channel and stumbled upon some Teesha Moore videos. LOVED them! She makes an "Amazing 16 Page Journal" that I just made. I'll be making more! (HA! No pun intended).

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Above all else, LISTEN TO YOUR HEART! There are NO judgements. There are NO rights and wrongs. Express yourself, and follow my art journaling blog where you'll get lots of encouragement and craziness!

She lives with her husband, Keith, and has two sons, Nick & Mike. This artist's works vary from impressionistic landscapes to bold political commentary and bright, representational paintings. When viewing An'Angelia's work, her love of color is evident. Her paintings seem to vibrate right off the canvas and immediately command attention. How long have you been Art Journaling?

I have kept a written journal for years, but it wasn’t until 2007 I began to incorporate paint and images into them. It was at a time in my life where I felt a huge dissatisfaction with myself and with my life. I believe I had been living on auto pilot for many years. I think as women, well men too, it’s easy to slip into that way of doing life. We go through the motions without really being present and engaged. We forget to keep in touch with our own hearts and the dreams and desires we may have once had.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

It has been and continues to be one of the vehicles God uses to help me see and explore my heart and life. It was the spark that awakened and ignited a creative passion in me that had been lying dormant. I began seeing books on and websites on visual journaling everywhere. Like when you are pregnant and you see pregnant women everywhere. Visual journaling has opened a whole new world of amazing possibilities for me.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Some of my favorite materials to use are, acrylic paints, spray paints, stencils, gesso, I love that stuff!! Scrap papers and images. I love masking tape and decorative tape. I use alphabet and number stencils a lot.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

I love to look at other journalers and their work. I have a rather wide range of the styles I like. From pages that are simple and plain, to ones that are busy and loud. At the moment I am drawn to pages on the intense side and that are a little edgy and messy.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

I would encourage anyone thinking (even if you aren't thinking about it) about jumping into the world of visual journaling to just begin. You don’t need a lot of supplies (oh but you will want them). The most important thing to remember is to be kind to yourself. Don’t worry about the outcome of your pages. It’s not so much about making a work of art as it is working out what’s inside of you. Some pages will not be pretty, some will. That’s how it should be. You do not have to share your journal with anyone unless you choose to. Don’t be afraid to try new things, if the result is less than what you wanted that’s okay. You will learn in the process what works, what does not work. What you like and what you do not like. I know you have heard it said a thousand times. “It’s the process, not the product”. That’s because it the truth!!!!

I have been married for 33 years, to a wonderful, caring, warm, funny, exasperating at times, flawed (as we are all) man, who still thinks I look like I did at 19 (he’s blind) and likes my morning face!! I told you he’s blind!!!! We have three grown children, ages 30, 28, and 18. And we have one precious grandson, which also means we have a wonderful daughter-in-law. Life is good, rich, hard, confusing, rewarding, weary at times - and did I mention hard?? We are all such a mixture of our past, our present. We struggle sometimes understanding others, and our own hearts.

I have kept a writing journal for many years. In 2007 I picked up a book on visual journaling and began something new. God has and continues to use this creative outlet to transform me. It has become a tool that God uses to help me see deeper into my heart. To help me get past the masks I wear. I don't quite understand the connection between creating and the heart, and God, but I know it exists. I do know that God, the master artist, has created us all to be creative in some form. That creativity looks different in all of us. I am deep in the middle of exploring, growing, changing, into what God has created me to be. As I come to experience God's unconditional love for me in greater measure, my heart becomes more his, my desires become more his, my life becomes more his. It is not always easy, but it is a splendid adventure.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
I have been Art Journaling for about 3 years now. I moved from Holland to the UK almost 4 years ago (for Love!!) and after I settled I was looking for a new hobby. At first that was pebble painting (the 'Timeless' I often use in my name is from when I used to sell painted pebbles in my Etsy shop), and one day when having a look around online I stumbled across YouTube on Art Journaling. It was different than the visual journals I had seen before. I had always kept a written journal, but this seemed so much fun that I had to try!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
As someone who has kept a written journal since she was 9, Art Journaling is a completely different way of getting your thoughts, feelings and experiences on paper.

Writing is one dimensional. Art Journaling is Writing Plus. I see things, hear things, find or buy things that will 'go in my book'. It's not something I do in private anymore. I share my pages on my blog, Flickr, on Artjournaling.ning.com. There are so many Art Journalers out there who inspire me on a daily basis. If it wasn't for Art Journaling, I would not have so much fun online, and I doubt I would do any Youtube videos. Or even watch them, for that matter. I have made many friends through Art Journaling, and I could not imagine life without it anymore.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
I like to keep things simple, and if I can, cheap. My must-haves are acrylics, baby wipes, and watersoluble crayons. Throw in a couple of pens and I'm sorted.

There is no 'wrong' in Art Journaling, and if you don't feel like sharing your work with the rest of the world, you don't have to! But most of all: have fun!

How long have you been Art Journaling?
For only a year and four months, actually! But I believe I've been doing it unconsciously for years and years, since I was five. I would draw myself and my adventures at school on my dad's office paper when he wasn't looking. :) Then it continued into a daily comic drawn on notebook paper and titled "Natty's Boring Life". Art and journaling have always been hand-in-hand in my life.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Creating art journals has been the most therapeutic activity I've ever done. I started when I was going through very troubling times, when I was doubting myself and my own life, and when I thought I lost everything. Journaling it out was the way to get through that tough time in my life, and it has been helping me ever since.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
My white uniball signo gel pen! It's absolutely amazing, and the best white pen I've ever used! Also Golden Soft Gel Medium, because I love image transfers, and it gives me the smoothest results. Oh, and tissue paper, because it's just amazing and there's so many things you can use it for! :)

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?
Samantha Kira (www.journalgirl.com), for sure! When I first looked up Art Journals on youtube, she was the first one I picked out, and she is an amazing source of inspiration.

And Dina Wakley (dinastamps.typepad.com), hands down, has the best techniques I've ever seen. I've enjoyed all of her classes, and she has such a unique and fresh style.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Find inspiration in the small things in life.

If you're scared that you have nothing to journal about, just do it for the sake of art! You can journal on it later!

Also, if you're a scrapbooker, or like the looks of scrapbooks, don't be afraid to use that style in your art journal. Do what you like. If it still looks dorky to you, study what you do like and practice! Just don't copy too closely, unless you give credit!

How long have you been art journaling?
Well, during my teen years I was a bit of a collage freak, but I didn't get into actual art journaling until recently. I actually know the exact date I started my first art journal--November 4, 2009 (I dated the page).

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Wow, it has changed my life so much! I was pretty bored and burnt out on my job when I started my art journal. If you've ever worked in retail during the holidays, you know how I felt. But once I started making creativity a part of my daily life, I immediately felt so much happier! I began to love art journaling so much that I wanted to tell the world about it! So, in January 2010 I started my blog and it's been going strong ever since.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
GESSO! One thing I learned from Art Journal Love Letters is that there are two kinds of art journalers: gel medium freaks and gesso freaks. I am the latter. Gotta have my gesso! I also love cheap acrylic paint, watercolor, origami paper, water-soluble oil pastels, old book pages, stencils, and tissue paper.

Oh, and do visit my blog where you can learn how to find all sorts of cheap art supplies, plus plenty of ideas on how to use them.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

I began combining my journals with my sketchbooks when I started the Every Day Matters challenges in 2008. The more I wrote, the more I wanted to draw and paint in them.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

That is immeasurable! I am so much happier and complete. In every aspect of my life from family to work to my love life, I am freer and more confident. The willingness to just pour raw creativity onto a page really allows you to let that creativity spill over into your whole life.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials?

I prefer the cheapest materials around. Mostly, I like the way the very cheap papers, acrylic paints, and watercolors, brown over time. I really like the “Urban Decay” feel it gives my work. I also use a lot of spray paint and children’s toys.

I have been a closet artist my whole life. I have always kept sketchbooks and journals. However, at a very young age someone dear to me told me that what I was doing wasn’t “pretty” and that I couldn’t really be an artist. I was crushed. I quit openly practicing. It didn’t stop me from trying to do it secretly, though. My secret obsession with blank books and pens has cost me a fortune over the years. When I say it “cost me”, that’s because I never followed through with it. I would buy them and use maybe two or three pages and then they would go into a closet until they were eventually thrown out as part of a cleanup.

In 2007, my grandfather died, and then in 2008 my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It turned out that hers was just a tumor and was completely operable, but the brush with death was all I needed to open my eyes to the fact that I was missing what precious little life I have left. I decided to start keeping a sketchbook again. Interestingly enough, that entire journey is online. I have shared every moment of that at http://artisticbiker.com.

It has given me greater insight into who I am and the things that are important to me. I was scared to start, thinking I had to do it 'right'. But, then, with your encouragement and inspiration, I just started to play. I slowly realized that my art journaling could be anything I wanted it to be and I could do it in anyway that felt fun and comfortable to me. My very first art journal was a 99 cent children's doodle pad, some crayons, sharpies and oil pastels. I then moved up to BIG paper, a journal specifically designed for drawing and painting and different paints. **So, I would say, just start, play, have fun and start with the materials you have.**

Art journaling has a big place in my life …It’s like therapy, I express all my feelings through my journals.

When I feel sad or happy, I need to express it by creating a page. Art journaling has an aim for me..That’s really different than scrapbooking where I only decorate a page with a picture I loved.

Art is my therapy….

Even if my mother tongue is French, I often write in english in my journals…I don’t know why, I think it’s easier for me to express my feelings in English.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
I started journaling in 2007. I've attached my very first page. I'd been doing altered books for quite awhile before that, but this was my first official Art Journal.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Omgosh, it has been such a wonderful tool in my art and personal life. It really brings the two together; where my two worlds meet. I can look back at how my art has evolved and revisit old techniques, pour out my feelings and cover them up again, or practice, practice, practice something I want to learn such as portraits. My life is very busy right now and often journaling is the only form of creating I can work in that's just for me.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
I have been art journaling for about 3 years, but I have kept "standard" journals for over 10. You can actually check out my transition from written to art journaling on my blog post A Decade of Journals.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Like written journaling, art journaling gives me an outlet, a place to reflect, and encourages me to be more observant and curious.

As for art journaling in particular: I think many of us deny ourselves "art" as a creative outlet because it's only for certain people - in my case, I wasn't ever "allowed" to do it because I can't really draw. I've always been into writing and bookmaking (as well as a million other "craft" things) but finally allowing myself to paint and draw like I've always wanted to has really opened me up. Fighting these little battles in your journal really does spill out into the rest of your life - it may take some time to build but letting yourself BE yourself in a little corner of your life will eventually spread to the rest of it. At the risk of sounding like an infomercial, I'm generally happier, more creative and more myself. As if that wasn't enough, it's given me an excuse to join a great online community of fellow journalers!

I go through phases, but my standbys are the cheap craft paints and markers (particularly sharpies) or pens.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
I see a lot of people freaking out about doing things the "right" way which I think is interesting. A journal is a totally private place (unless, um, you post videos of it on the internet....but that's optional!) and is by definition a place to explore and get to know yourself. It sounds cliche but there really is no right or wrong - just try things, anything. That includes rubbing dirt on your journal, if you feel like it. Or licking it (but maybe do that BEFORE rubbing the dirt on it). There is no failure, only learning. Enjoy the process and the adventure of finding yourself and your style. Have fun!

How long have you been Art Journaling?

Since shortly after the earth cooled. When I was first-grader, I wanted to write stories. As not much had happened to me yet, I wanted to add illustrations. I pretended to be all the characters in my stories, and I drew things I imagined—most of them not recognizable by anyone by me. This surprised me because it was so important to my imagination and so clear to me.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

I believe we don’t FIND meaning in life, we MAKE meaning. And that’s what art journaiing—or raw art journaling—does, it helps make meaning in life. I’ve used journaling to explore, sort things out, be angry, get out grief, and hold on to joy. That’s pretty much for a small book. I call this kind of meaning-making “raw art journaling” because it is raw emotion, raw art, raw truth.

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

I’m a minimalist. I’ve tried lots of materials, though—acrylic paint, watercolor, inks, sewing, collage, transfers, attaching found objects, piercing, cutting, dye applications, gel pens, letter stamps.

But when it comes down to working in my journals, I always come back to pencils, ink, pens, watercolor pencils and a wet brush.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?

Besides you? Well, I like the usual suspects, and I’ve found a ton more since I started working with North Light Books, but here are some that use a lot of words in their work, which I find fascinating:

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Look at a lot, then do what you like. You don’t need to be a writer or an illustrator, you just have to be curious about the world you live in and your path through that world. Don’t depend on kits and a lot of supplies—a pencil, pen, and a piece of paper, and an open mind is a good start.

Short Bio:

I believe in change and re-inventing yourself. I believe in being curious about the path we are on in the world we inhabit and create every day. When I was growing up, I was supposed to be a nurse. I wanted to be a science-fiction writer, but that wasn’t allowed for little girls of that age. So now I own my business—writing, training people to write, to communicate with others unlike them, to keep journals, celebrate their life. (I’m a celebrant who performs weddings and other life transition ceremonies. It’s really just acting out the stuff that works its way into art journals.)

The creative force—the urge to make something—is important in my life. Important enough to be both a life coach and a certified creativity coach. Because nature is the ultimate creative force, I am a naturalist (no, not a nudist, that’s something else) and a lot of my journaling is about what I learn from nature.

I write the Business of Art column for Somerset Studio magazine, and am writing a book, “Raw Art Journaling: Making Meaning, Making Art.” The book will be published by North Light Books in June of 2011.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
I have two Art Journaling Anniversaries. One is December 2009, when I began a collaborative art journal project with 3 friends. The second is February 2010 when I joined Art Journal Love Letters! AJLL is when I first went all out with paint, layering, and all that goodness. So, I have not been art journaling long!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Art Journaling (starting with Art Journal LOVE Letters) has made me braver in art. I can now go to a page or canvas and cover everything with color and then do more and more, recklessly! It has helped me see my art as always in-progress. I can always add or take away.

I also find myself looking at a lot of little booklets, junk mail, etc. and thinking: I could paint over that and make it into an art journal!

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?
I bet a lot of people will give this answer: gel medium. I had never used it before Art Journal LOVE Letters and it really is great. I also now like to use tissue paper in some of my painted pieces. In general, art journaling has made me even more likely to use anything within reach in my art. You start to see the way all kinds of objects could be used to create texture, for instance. I love that.

Who are some of your favorite Art Journalers?
Besides Connie, of course, some of my favorites are Lisa Hofmann, Milliande, and Tammy.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Dive right in. Don't worry about where your journal page is going. Just start making colors and shapes and you'll soon find your way. And if you can share your art with other people excited about creativity, you'll feed off each others' energy and things will get wild.

How long have you been Art Journaling?
I've been art journaling for over 12 years, though I always journaled and kept a sketchbook since I was 10 years old.

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?
Art journaling lets me think through ideas for written pieces, art works and stimulates my mind for other projects. A couple of years ago I built my own moped. I got the idea I wanted a moped that looked like a Harley. (Yeah yeah I know) I did research online about motorized bikes, found a frame and built it. It's something I never would have tried if it weren't for my art journal.

I got the idea for the twitter hand experiment while working in my art journal. I was drawing hands in a horrible manner, and tried drawing my own and then thought, "Heck, I'll ask twitter." It was awesome.

Sometimes I create art in my art journal, I draw, paint or just write. My art journal is a place to work out ideas, think and give my mind a work out.

Watercolors, Watercolor crayons, acrylic paint, white glue, gesso, ink and gel pens

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?
Keep at it. If you are feeling uninspired, slop some paint on a page. Scribble in a background with watercolor crayons, slop some water on that. Get in the practice of adding process to get you out of your rut and you'll find something to wake up your senses. Also head to ArtJournaling.ning.com and poke around you are bound to stumble upon some art, some ideas or something to wake up your mind! I'm a big believer in practice making art better, the more you do it the better you get. Hand eye coordination is something you can exercise, like a muscle and all you need are a few metaphoric dumbell curls to tone it up.

I have been making art ever since I could hold a crayon. When I was young I drew on walls, refrigerators and paper. Now that I’m older I still work on paper but I love to paint and draw on board. I also love to work in the book format. Much of my art is in the page format.

How long have you been Art Journaling?

Less than a year!

How has Art Journaling impacted, changed, or enhanced your life?

It's given me permission to play and experiment without having to worry so much about the finished product. It's gotten me out of the "I need to produce work that will sell" mentality, and more into the "Girls just wanna have fun" mentality. :-)

What are a few of your favorite Art Journaling materials to use?

Paints and my fingers. I love to finger paint! I love getting my hands all messy. I'm uncomfortable with a real paintbrush in my hands, but give me just a regular old foam brush or my fingers and I'm happy. I've also never passed by a simple foam stamp I didn't love.

What kind words of encouragement would you say to an Art Journal newbie?

Just do it. I had a block at first (and still do sometimes) about the "journaling part". I'm a pretty simple, happy girl and honestly don't do a lot of deep introspective thinking, so the writing part of art journaling tripped me up at first (and I'm a writer with a master's degree in English!). I prefer just little snippets of text, random thoughts, simple words, etc, and often don't write on my pages until after I've photographed them to share.
